This
ensemble is the third and final iteration of the conical hole series.
The two side tables are twenty inches in length, width, and height. The center
table is twenty by forty inches, and sixteen inches tall. They are made
from 8/4 soft maple. The infill for all three tables is ½ inch
Italian slate.
I have returned
to the frame and infill language of the first table. But this time
rather then express the full thickness of the frame, I tapered the edge
along a curve. The table achieves the desired "lightness" in the middle
while allowing the full two inches of thickness for the strength of the joint.
I entered these tables
at IWF (The International Woodworking Fair) at the Georgia World Congress Center
in the summer of 2002. I won second place, and an opportunity to talk to people
in the industry. It was a great experience.
