The
first piece of fine furniture I have ever made, this table is the first
in a series of tables that feature the conical hole. Using a router,
a three-inch flush trimming bit with the bearing removed, and a custom
designed jig I was able to make the leg joint. The table leg is then
turned conically to match the hole in the frame. Held together only
using glue, the joint is solid. The joint is a wonderful expression
of the nature of the forces being transmitted from the top to the legs.
The frame and
legs are derived from 8/4 curly maple. The infill panel is plywood
veneered with crotch burl maple; a combination walnut maple inlay
surrounds it. The finish is three coats of Minwax Wipe-on Poly glossy,
and a final coat of Minwax Wipe-on Poly satin. The finish is knocked
down with a purple Scotch-Brite pad in-between each coat.
