I
made this stool as a part of a class I was taking in the fall of two
thousand. It is made from one board of 8/4 maple 12 feet long and 8
inches wide. The idea for the large dovetail is an abstraction of the
joint between a guitar neck and the guitar body. The top is held together
with four vertically apposed ¼" x 1 ½" splines
in each of the three joints. This has proven to hold the top together
despite expansion and contraction.
The holes on the
bottom were to facilitate the clamping of the top using custom miter
clamps. Before the circle was cut out the top was triangular. The
outside was notched to provide two points of pressure to glue the
top.
The stool is finished
with two coats of Minwax Wipe on Poly glossy, and a final coat of
Minwax Wipe on Poly satin.
